By the time the interface became more and more important - and extensive. It needed more memory space and faster processors. But by mass production the computer became always cheaper and the rising number of users now could take influence to the production.
How much this interaction producer/consumer became important you now (2014) can see by the spreading of 'smartphones' and 'tablets'. Though they are based on computer principles, it is nearly impossible to use them as a normal (programmable) computer as work station. They are adapted to wide-spread tasks of communication and entertainment to which a desktop PC and still a notebook are not handsome enough.
